What the Mustangs Say About Wayne County...
When they dropped down to 4A, it put a new spin on our district. Obviously, they were such a power. We would prefer that they stay in 5A.
Bruce Adams
West Jones Offensive Coordinator
I know they are dirty when they play football. They play rough. They are just not nice. They are seen as the bullies on the block.
Kaleigh Byrd
West Jones Cheerleader
The crowds are just amazing. If you are in the south part of the state during week 10 of the football season, you need to visit Mustang Stadium or War Eagle Stadium for some good football.
Nicholas Carr
West Jones Student
Instead of War Eagles, we like to call them “War Chickens.” We wear KFC buckets on our heads.
Chase Headrick
West Jones Football Player
When they moved down to 4A after winning the 5A state championship, they weren’t expecting anybody to beat them. Then we came in and beat them the first time we played. I think that really sparked the rivalry.
Adam Herrington
West Jones Football Player
We like to think that Wayne County got in our way of winning one – maybe two – state championships.
Mark Herrington
West Jones Principal
When they fell to 4A and got put in our district, they felt like they were the only big dog in the hunt.
Dr. G. Harlon Mathews
West Jones Booster Club President
They have big trucks and coon dogs.
Kirby Mauldin
Community Leader
They are arrogant and real cocky. They have shirts that say, “It’s like taking candy from a baby.” Their cheerleaders made a sign that said, “Do we have to keep embarrassing you year after year?"
Maylen Musgrove
West Jones Cheerleader
Scott and Marcus respect each other enough to know, “I’m going to play you just as hard as I can, because I know that’s how you are going to play me.
Angela Pierson
Wife of Head Football Coach Scott Pierson
The first game was a game of wills. I think we just wanted to prove that we belonged, so we played a little bit harder. We were fortunate to win. To be honest with you, they were every bit as good in 2003 as they were in 2002.
Scott Pierson
West Jones Head Football Coach
There is no love lost between the two schools. You either eat crow for 364 days or you get to brag.
Bruce Adams
West Jones Offensive Coordinator
Wayne County is always big and fast. Most of the time, they think they have more talent than we do. They think we are small and overrated.
Chase Headrick
West Jones Football Player
It’s more than just football; it’s a school rivalry. Football led the way, but they don’t like us in nothin’.
Michael Thigpen
Former West Jones Football Player
They had t-shirts that said, “We don’t rebuild. We reload.” That’s really evident in their program. Every year they just reach down and pull up another group of athletes.
Mark Herrington
West Jones Principal
I have two sons and they love Auburn, but they won’t wear anything from Auburn because it looks too much like Wayne County.
Bruce Adams
West Jones Offensive Coordinator
One of the best t-shirts we ever had said, “The reason football was invented – West Jones vs. Wayne County.” Even their fans wanted to buy that shirt.
Dr. G. Harlon Mathews
West Jones Booster Club President

What the War Eagles Say About West Jones...
I’ve never coached anywhere that always had so much on the line every time you were playing a particular team. Our kids love to compete against West Jones in any sport, and they respect the athletes at West Jones. My staff and I have a great deal of respect for Scott and his staff. But we want to beat them.
Marcus Boyles
Wayne County Head Football Coach
After we beat West Jones in the playoffs in 2003, we went on to beat Oxford 30-7 for the state. There is no doubt in my mind West Jones would have beaten Oxford by two touchdowns easy. We have kept them from winning at least one state championship.
Kenny Odom
Wayne County Football Radio Announcer
You can look at a map of Mississippi and see where the champions come from. This is a very good region for high school football.
Marshall Wood
Former Mayor of Waynesboro
We’re hungry for more championships. We want to be able to have ten fingers full and maybe even be able to put them on our toes. That’s how many more championships we want. West Jones will never be our stopping point again. They are just like a stumbling block that you can easily overcome.
Katerra Stephenson
Wayne County Cheerleader
West Jones sees us as the country bumpkins.
Myra Boyles
Wife of Head Football Coach Marcus Boyles
When West Jones and Wayne County play, you can expect a big crowd.
Donta Chambers

There are actually fans from the other county schools in Jones County that will come and watch this game.
B.R. Jones

During the Wayne County-West Jones game, the noise is so loud you can’t hear yourself when you take the field. Everything about Wayne County and West Jones playing is just indescribable.
Brandon Jordan
Former Wayne County Football Player
With my occupation, I am on the phone with clients across the state that come to Ellisville just to see this game. There are literally people traveling from north Mississippi just to watch this football game.
Marshall Wood
Former Mayor of Waynesboro
The rivalry between West Jones and Wayne County goes on all year long in all sports. We just want the bragging rights.
Tracy Lamply
Wayne County Football Player
West Jones are the rich boys and we’re the country hicks.
Keith Smith
Wayne County Football and Baseball Player
There are people who get into the game more than they have ever gotten into a game in their lives when it comes to the West Jones-Wayne County game.
Katerra Stephenson
Wayne County Cheerleader
When I graduated and went on to college with the same guys I played against from West Jones, I realized they were much like us – just good ole boys that loved to play football.
Brandon Jordan
Former Wayne County Football Player
Wayne County’s football program is better than West Jones’s because we have the best coaching staff and they know what it takes to win games. They know how to get us ready.
Tracy Lamply
Wayne County Football Player
It never gets old beating West Jones.
Keith Smith
Wayne County Football and Baseball Player
Sometimes at the movies I’ll have a Wayne County jacket on and I’ll see a person from West Jones with their jacket on. We both cut our eyes at each other. People you don’t even know from there, you dislike.
Katerra Stephenson
Wayne County Cheerleader
