What the Bearcats Say About Booneville...
When we are playing them, the rivalry is nasty. But when we are just hanging out, it’s okay.
Becky Bishop
Former Baldwyn Cheerleader
It’s a unique rivalry due to the closeness of the two communities. Our kids know each other; so do entire families. The rivalry has been there for years and years and it has built and built. Regardless of the size of the respective schools, we still have to play this game.
Jimmy Dillinger
Baldwyn Head Football Coach
Booneville thinks they are better than us. They are kind of snobbish.
Clay Gholston
Former Baldwyn Football Player
It doesn’t matter if it’s jacks, hopscotch, Tiddlywinks, football, baseball, basketball or whatever; if it’s Baldwyn and Booneville, it’s going to be a clash.
Danny Horton
Mayor of Baldwyn
When I was in high school at Baldwyn in the early ‘70s, there was a Baldwyn boy dating a girl from Booneville. If she came to Baldwyn, that girl got her tail whipped by a bunch of girls. You didn’t date anybody from up there and they didn’t come down here. You just didn’t do that.
Melanie Long
Former Baldwyn Student
The adults don’t have any animosity toward Booneville folks. However, to beat Booneville is really something that makes you feel good. After we win, it’s more enjoyable going to Booneville to shop or eat out and wear your Baldwyn shirt.
LaRane Dillinger
Baldwyn Head Football Coach’s Wife
This rivalry is unique because you know you are fixing to get 48 minutes of hard-fought football. We’ve been on the end of getting kicked for 48 minutes and we’ve been on the other end of kicking back.
Michael Gray
Baldwyn Assistant Football Coach
You have two coaching staffs that really prepare their kids, not only for the Booneville-Baldwyn game, but for all their games. Once the game is over, many of the coaches play golf together and are close friends.
Ronnie Hill
Baldwyn Principal
The Booneville cheerleaders act like they are trying to compete against us, even though they are not in our division. They act like, ‘We are better than y’all.’ We say, ‘Not really, but whatever you want to think!’
Becky Bishop
Former Baldwyn Cheerleader
They look at us like we are a small little town and we can’t do anything. They view themselves as a big town that has everything. We don’t see it that way.
Jarvey Grice
Former Baldwyn Football Player
Coach Drewry has done a great job year after year. He is one of the best coaches in Mississippi.
Jimmy Dillinger
Baldwyn Head Football Coach
There is something about the way they act. It seems like they are arrogant.
Dominique Davenport
Former Baldwyn Football Player
Everybody in Baldwyn thinks Booneville is preppy. I think we get stereotyped as just the opposite.
Brody McCreary
Former Baldwyn Football Player
Over time growing up, you know each other because the towns are only 10 miles apart. You play Little League baseball against each other. You develop a love-hate relationship. You love to beat them and you hate to lose to them.
Gregg Tucker, Baldwyn Assistant Football Coach
